AERIAL PHOTOS VERSUS VIDEO
When it comes to using your drone, recording video requires a much different approach than shooting photos.
Taking photos with your drone only requires you to get your drone into position, frame up your shot and press the Shutter Button. It doesn’t matter how you got there- what matters is what fills the rectangular frame you see through your lens for the fraction of a second when you capture the photo. Of course, the photos can be amazing and are not to be dismissed as inferior to video. It’s just a different game. The beauty of photography is that you can really freeze that fraction of a second and give your viewers the opportunity to look deeply into the photograph.
Recording video is all about movement. You can tell a story with the movement. You can create emotion. You can make a point. Since video moves from frame to frame, you can be creative with how to transport your audience from one scene to the next. Video is more fleeting because the moments can pass by so quickly, and then they are gone. Unless you watch it again, of course, which you probably will. We will get more into creating movement in the section on aerial cinematography. Fortunately, Karma’s Auto Shot Paths make it really easy to create professional movement even for beginners.
Of course, it’s easy to pull a frame out of video footage and use it as a photo. A frame grab is not going to have the same quality as a photo, but sometimes they can do the trick. But, it’s the intention of taking a photo that will really set your photos apart from your videos.
If you have a hard time remembering to record videos and take photos and you have more than one battery, dedicate one battery to just taking photos every time you go out to fly.
